Dr. Monowar H Bhuyan, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering has been awarded fellowship by IICB| ISOC Kolkata Chapter and approved by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India to participate into IETF 98, March 26-31, 2017 held at Chicago, Illinois, USA for continuous contribution to the Internet Society. He represent the Assam Kaziranga University in the International platform, where 1632 participants registered to the meeting from more than 50 countries. They are mostly from academia, scientists and industry experts and exchanged knowledge towards excellent Internet in more than 130 active research working groups.

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is a large open international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. It is open to any interested individual. The mission of the IETF is to produce high quality, relevant technical and engineering documents that influence the way peopledesign, use, and manage the Internet in such a way as to make the Internet work better. These documents include protocol standards,best current practices, and informational documents of various kinds.The actual technical work of the IETF is done in its working groups based on topics of several areas such as routing, transport, security, etc.

The IETF working groups are grouped into areas, and managed by Area Directors. The Area Directors are members of the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG). Internet Architecture Board, (IAB) provides architectural oversight. The IAB also adjudicates appeals when someone complains that the IESG has failed. The IAB and IESG are chartered by the Internet Society (ISOC) for these purposes. The General Area Director also serves as the chair of the IESG and of the IETF, and is an ex-officio member of the IAB.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is the central coordinator for the assignment of unique parameter values for Internet protocols. The IANA is chartered by the Internet Society (ISOC) to act as the clearinghouse to assign and coordinate the use of numerous Internet protocol parameters.In practice, the Internet standard process is more complicated, due to (i) the difficulty of creating specifications of high technical quality; (ii) the need to consider the interests of all of the affected parties; (iii) the importance of establishing widespread community consensus; and (iv) the difficulty of evaluating the utility of a particular specification for the Internet community.

The goals of the Internet standards process are:

  • technical excellence;
  • prior implementation and testing;
  • clear, concise, and easily understood documentation;
  • openness and fairness; and
  • timeliness.

Dr. Bhuyan has made collaborations with Professor J William Atwood, Distinguished Professor Emeritus Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Concordia University, Canada and Professor Jay Misra, Department of Computer Science, New Mexico State University, USA. Dr. Bhuyan noted that this is a great value addition to the University in enhancing research and development. He is involved in the security automation and continuous monitoringgroup towards contribution to this areas. Finally, he felt that contributing to IETF is a great achievement.
