Faculty members of Kaziranga University invited as Guests of honour in the Annual General Body Meeting of Konoklota Mahila Bank, Jorhat

Dr Braja S. Mishra and  Ms Preeti  Sarmah from School of Social Sciences were invited to participate in the Annual General Board meeting of Konoklota Mahila Urban Cooperative Bank of Jorhat, held on 20th July, 2019.

"Konoklota Mahila Urban Co-operative Bank Limited" was  registered under Co-operative Societies Act 1949 and came into existence on May 22, 1998. It was named after Swahid Konoklota Barua, the martyr of Quit India Movement from Gahpur, Tezpur district of Assam who sacrificed her life for independence of India. The Reserve Bank of India granted license to Konoklota Mahila Urban Co-operative Bank Limited on 16.02.2000 to commence banking business.  This is first and only Women's Bank in the North East region, though its operation is limited to four districts of Assam and has immense scope for expansion.

For its exemplary contribution in women's finance, on International Women's Day i.e. 8th March, 2016, Ministry of Women & Child Development, Government of India confers Nari Shakti Award to the Bank towards empowerment of women.

Dr Mishra was invited as a Guest of Honour to speak on the role of Women's Finance and Cooperative sector in the overall socio-economic development of our society. He emphasized that despite having such an exclusive bank for women, which mostly caters to the financial services of underprivileged women, its work is not known to the wider world due to lack of publicity and documentation. In this context the School of Social Sciences, Kaziranga University proposed to prepare a knowledge document on the good work being by the bank and bring out a publication. It was highly appreciated and AGM decided in principle to extend all support for the same.
