The School of Social Sciences celebrated International Women’s Day on 6th & 8th March, 2021 in association with UNESCO Association

The School of Social Sciences, The Assam Kaziranga University celebrated the International Women’s Day on 6th and 8th March 2021 in collaboration with UNESCO Association and Community Club, KU. The theme of the event was – Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a Covid-19 World. The event started with an inaugural address delivered by Dr. Golak B Patra Asst. Professor and Associate Dean, School of Social Sciences.  The major theme of the event was Women in Leadership. The event was coordinated by Dr. Tshering Lepcha Assistant Professor, KUSSS. As a part of this event – the school organised various competitions like Poster Making, Street Play, Extempore Speech where students from different schools of the university had participated and won prizes.

In his welcome address by Professor (Dr.) Rupakjyoti Borah – the Dean of Social Sciences, Assam Kaziranga University highlighted about North East India and how beautiful it is to see matrilineal societies existing among the Khashi where property rights passes on to the daughters. He also cited the example of the women’s market in Manipur named as ‘Mother’s Market’. 

In his speech, Dr. Diganta Munshi, the Registrar, Assam Kaziranga University recognised the contribution made by women in various fields and also highlighted that women are more diligent, structured and focused in terms of work compared to their counterpart.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Aswini Sarma, Executive Director UN Resource Centre NER and Secretary-General UNSECO Association, Guwahati, highlighted the importance of celebrating this day and how Women’s Day was observed during the pre-Soviet period.

Shri Tanuj Goswami who is a retired IAS officer relayed the message of UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres and conveyed his message to the participants on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2021.

The Guest of Honour of the event, Professor (Dr.) Marami Borthakur who was the former HOD of Abhyapuri College, Assam delivered a very thought-provoking speech where she also highlighted in details about the importance of celebrating this day. The entire event was a great success with participation and support provided by all the six schools of the university and students.
