Webinar on Importance of Fieldwork in Social Work Education and Challenges during COVID-19 Pandemic, organized by the School of Social Sciences.

The school of social sciences, The Assam Kaziranga University organized a webinar on the “Importance of Fieldwork in Social Work Education and Challenges during COVID-19 Pandemic” on 19th June 2021. The key speaker of the webinar was Ms. Farhana Yasmin Hazarika who has been working as the Documentation officer at “Bachpan Bachao Andolan”, New Delhi. Ms. Hazarika was a former Assistant Professor in the School of Social Sciences,  The Assam Kaziranga University. 

The webinar started with the welcome address delivered by Dr. Golak B Patra, Asst. Professor and Associate Dean, School of Social Sciences, TAKU. The students MSW 2nd Semester and BSW 2nd Semester undergoing the virtual field work program under the supervision of Dr. Patra played an active role in organizing the webinar. 

The webinar focused on the following key points -

  •  What is field work and its importance in the field of  Social Work 
  • Challenges faced in carrying out fieldwork activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. 
  • Alternatives of fieldwork etc.

While discussing about the alternatives of fieldwork during this pandemic situation, she highlighted why fieldwork is an integral part of Social Work education, and suggested some the important options for the same - 

  • Accepting the present situation as the new normal.
  • Optimal use of technologies to reach out to people and know about their situation.
  • Enriching one's contacts using mobile phones, email, and other social media platforms to reach people, learn about them and help.
  • Organizing webinars and online activities to learn more about people and their problems.
  • Reading as much as possible – policies-programme-legislations and other interesting and relevant documents relevant for social work practices.
  • Making note of the mental health of the human society during the COVID19 Pandemic and helping them out as much as possible.
  • Learning through practice.

The webinar was interactive and fruitful for the student community. A total of 70 plus students participated in the webinar that ended with the vote of thanks offered by Mr. Rishiraj Handique, a student of MSW 2nd Semester, TAKU-SSS.
