The KU School of Engineering & Technology (SET) organized a two-day “Professional English Communication Skills” Workshop on 5th-6th October 2018, in association with Oxford University Press. The inaugural function of the “Professional English Communication Skills” workshop was held in the SOB Seminar Hall in the afternoon of 5th October 2018.
The inaugural function of the workshop was held in the SOB Seminar Hall in the afternoon of 5th October 2018, beginning with the lighting of the lamp by Chief Guest Dorothy Momin – a well-known faculty from the Department of English, from Devi Charan Barua Girls’ College, Jorhat. She was accompanied by distinguished guest, Dr Hory Sankar Mukerjee, Principal - Education & Research, Infosys Limited, Hyderabad; Dr. P.K Mishra, Vice Chancellor, KU; Prof. Tarun Kumar, Registrar, KU and Dr. Ashwini Kumar Sharma, Dean –SET.
It was followed by the highlighting of the aim of the workshop, delivered by Mr. Bishnu Gogoi, Co-ordinator of the programme. He stressed that the initiative would definitely nurture highly required skills with regard to communication for the students. It should be an outstanding chapter for the students in the accumulation and development of Professional English Communication Skills. The workshop aimed to offer to the participants a top quality grade workshop to enrich their ideas about the possible communication and language inputs.
The Chief Guest Dorothy Momin, was felicitated by Mr. Bishnu Gogoi with a traditional Gamusa, KU memento and a special gift. The chief guest thanked KU for inviting her to the programme, and mentioned her she gratefulness at the University’s gesture of calling her as the Chief Guest. She began her brief speech by a reference to a biblical story about the Tower of Babel. She said that when God created and the population multiplied, there was only one language. Eventually, this language became many.
The Chief Guest then talked about how communication in native tongue is very comfortable, but with English it is not as easy to master. But with thorough practice and patience, WE CAN. Communication is a soft-skill and CV is the selling document, and the communication process is the requirement for a good career. About the workshop, she mentioned, that it would help to praise people effectively and criticize constructively.
Mr. Rajib Saha felicitated the Distinguished Speaker Dr. Hory Sankar Mukerjee, Principal - Education & Research, Infosys Limited, Hyderabad and introduced the salient features of his towering profile to the gathering. The Dean SET, Prof (Dr.) Ashwini Kumar Sharma concisely pointed out his pleasure in organizing such an event for the students. He remarked that the workshop aimed to constructively help the students to develop their professional communication skills and show them the path to be industry-ready. Thereafter he declared the workshop open.
